Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums

 We hold diverse collections that touch on industry, technology and working lives.   This ranges from fine art depictions of industrial scenes through working costume-uniforms, medals and awards to archival material, film and examples of tools, products and machines.  

 

          

Being a local museum we tend to focus our attention on the history of Aberdeen in particular and the North East in general.   All the major industries of the area are represented.   Historically this means, granite, papermaking, textiles, horn, engineering, shipbuilding, fishing, agriculture, and more recently the oil industry.   The service has not been able to collect large industrial machinery hence processes such as granite working, papermaking and textile manufacture are represented through hand tools, photographs, archives and samples.   

                                                                                                                                                

Aberdeen Maritime Museum holds an extensive collection of material and is recognised as a national focal point for collecting and recording the history of the oil and natural gas industries. 

 Apart from the more obvious large industrial processes the museum service also holds items which represent the development and impact of transport in the area as well as examples of domestic technologies including radio; in addition we hold a large medical collection, this includes photographs, archives, tools and instruments. 

The history of the medieval Aberdeen has been explored by our archaeological service.  Its research and excavations have revealed many aspects of the medieval city’s industries and trades.
