Falkirk Council Museums
Falkirk was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in Scotland, marked by the founding of the Carron Iron Company in 1759. Objects from the many iron foundries, including patterns, tools, machinery and products form an important part of the collection. The brick making, chemicals, quarrying, woodworking, engineering, and ship building industries are also all represented in our collections.
The Museum service operates over 4 sites: Callendar House in Falkirk, Kinneil Museum and Birkhill Fireclay Mine in Bo'ness and Grangemouth Museum.
The main object collections are housed at the Museum Workshop in Grangemouth. Callendar House also provides a base for the Cultural Services Education, Access and Outreach team, the Council Archive service and for the Archaeology service.
The museum service aims to:
- Document, collect, and preserve the heritage and culture of the area for people now and in the future to engage with and enjoy.
- Programme and promote a range of permanent and temporary exhibitions of local and national significance.
- Work with schools, community groups and local residents through our education and outreach programmes.
- Provide visitors to the area with high quality tourist attractions.
